Welcome to my first blog status update/income report post!
Before we get into the numbers, I wanted to explain why I decided to start publishing updates like this. I’ve been blogging since late 2012 and seen quite a bit of growth and definitely a lot of learning. Over time, I have put some processes in place that keep me on track and growing. I have even started daily professional development where I spend at least 10 minutes a day learning something new that will help me grow or improve my blog. While 10 minutes doesn’t seem like a lot, it’s actually perfect to absorb little snippets of information and put them into action.
When deciding what my 2016 goals would be, I decided I wanted to treat my blog as a business and not just as a serious hobby. And that meant some changes. I’m calling the 2016 my “Go Pro” year! What this means is that I now have a regular posting schedule that I stick to without fail. My schedule is currently to post my own content twice a week (on Monday and Wednesday, unless a sponsored post is due on either of those days). If I have a sponsored post, it is posted in addition to my organic content.
In taking my blog pro, that also meant filing paperwork with the state to become an LLC. That hit a little snag which I will have to work through. They felt my business name was too close to another business’s name. All I have to do now is get them to sign a notarized letter saying that it will not cause a conflict. Considering I am My Real Food Family and they are My Real Estate Agent, I’m thinking that shouldn’t be a problem.
Anyway, I’ll be sharing more in future posts about how going pro is going for me but for now, I’ll share some January 2016 data with you.
Successes and challenges
My huge success this month was sticking to my posting plan. I posted unsponsored content twice a week and any sponsored content was additional. I sent out newsletters once a week so that was a win too. Now that I’ve gotten the hang of my newsletter/emailing program, it doesn’t take a lot of time for me to get everything set up and scheduled. (Are you subscribed to my newsletter? Here’s the link if you’d like to – I’ll even give you a free ebook). I’ve been able to get systems in place to keep me organized and on track which has really helped me become more efficient and get more done in the amount of time that I have to devote to blogging. And the biggest win for the month was having the highest number of blog views ever. That was due to this post that went viral and had a bunch of views.
My challenges now are figuring out how to increase my pageviews even more and maintain that level. And the biggest challenge for me right now is finding time to do everything that I’d like to. The good news is that I have a list of post ideas so I’ve got plenty of new content coming. I currently have a list long enough for about 87 years of content. And I add to it daily. Another challenge was having the LLC paperwork returned because my name was similar to another name. Kind of ridiculous if you ask me, but still something I need to get straightened out.
Like I mentioned above, January was the month with the highest blog views ever for my little space on the internet. My goal for the month was 20K views, but thanks to the post that went viral, I far exceeded that!
Top 5 Posts for the Month
Spinach Bacon Salad (by far the most viewed)
Warm Bacon Salad Dressing (gotta have something to go on the salad, right?)
Income and Expenses
Now for the accounting stuff.
|Food Blogger Pro||$29.00|
Expenses were unusually high this month because I decided to combine my old website with this one and paid someone to redirect it for me to make sure nothing got messed up. I also paid for a full year of Tailwind to simplify my efforts on Pinterest (and so far it’s been well-worth the investment). I expect February profit to be higher. I’m not making the big bucks yet compared to the time I’m investing in the website. It’s still a labor of love for me and the income helps offset some of the cost of running the site.
Goals for next month
- 20K+ views
- $500 profit
- 10 non-sponsored posts
- Grow email list to 150+ subscribers (currently at 91 – you can help me reach this one and subscribe here :))
- Increase social media following by 10% (Facebook, Instagram, Pinterest)
- Continue adding to ebook – will be published April 1st!
Lots of exciting things coming up and lots of work to be done! Now back to the kitchen and get some more recipes created!
