The beginning of a new year brings all types of health and fitness resolutions.  I’ve been hearing and seeing tons of ads already about quick weight loss tricks and magic pills you can take to lose weight without diet or exercise.  The truth is that none of those things will work long term.  Eating right and moving more is all there is to getting to and maintaining a healthy weight.  And you can get started on it right now!

One of the benefits of regular exercise is the lasting effects even after your workout is done.  So I thought I’d take a few minutes and share a few ideas that may help get your metabolic furnace burning!

  • Take a 30 minute walk during the day.  Varying speeds during your walk can really help burn additional fat and increase your heart rate.
  • Eat 5-6 small meals during the day.  This allows your body to process food continuously and prevent it from going into starvation mode.  Be sure to include a lean protein source like beans, chicken or peanut butter.
  • Weight train 3 times a week.  Because muscle burns fat even during sleep, weight training can not only transform your shape, but help you lose weight as well.  Even if you don’t have access to a gym, hand weights like these are relatively inexpensive and allow you to work out at home.  Body weight exercises are helpful too and require no equipment.  You can check out some of our free workouts here.
  • Drink more water.  I’m sure by now you’ve heard the benefits of water.  But did you know that by increasing your water consumption by 50 ounces a day can burn an extra 17,000 calories.  That can result in about 5 pounds of weight loss.  For more ideas to get more water throughout the day, try these suggestions.
  • Spice up your food.  Black pepper, red pepper, ginger, cinnamon, and mustard seed can all help your body burn additional fat.  Sprinkle a little onto your food each day and really spice things up!
  • Minimize carbs and junk food.  Carbohydrate laden foods can make you feel sluggish and tired.  Minimizing them or eliminating them entirely can spark your metabolism too.  Opt instead for healthy carbs like these.
